    Hidden Realms - WIP (Prologue, Chapters 1 & 2)

“True friends are always together in spirit.” ~ L.M. Montgomery

    Prologue

The fairy court buzzed with the news.  Their most beloved Princess Miranda was to be engaged to the dashing Prince Ryan of the Pixie Realm.  Such a union would unite these two kingdoms and brush aside any lasting grievances over their short-lived war.

Fairies and pixies seem similar to those from the human realm, but there couldn’t be two more different if one looked closely.  Faeries loved the night.  Their silver fairy dust was most powerful in the evening…as the sun set and the moon rose.  Their royal gardens were planned around the flowers with lovely fragrances, often white, that reflected the moonlight.

Pixies loved the sun.  Their magic was golden fairy dust, used to help plants and animals thrive in any land.  They loved all growing things and did their best to support them.

The idea that these two differing groups could both celebrate such a joyous occasion brought new hope to the entire magical realm.  Gnomes, elves, and even trolls would be happy to celebrate this union.

While the betrothed had never actually met, Princess Miranda and Prince Ryan were thought to be a perfect match by everyone else.

    Chapter 1

Princess Miranda’s three fairies-in-waiting were thrilled about the wedding and full of questions.

“Where will the wedding take place?” Valeria asked.

“Will it be at first light or after sunset?” Syrena wondered.

“What will you wear?” Elena asked.

“What will we wear?” they all asked at the same time.

Princess Miranda’s light blonde hair sparkled in the sunlight and her laugh sounded like tinkling bells.  “You are all such loyal and wonderful friends, but I have no idea how to answer any of those questions.”

“We’ll need to find out,” Valeria said, her auburn curls bouncing.  “How can we help you plan if we don’t have details?”

“I’ve heard he’s very handsome,” Elena noted, twirling a long, black spiral curl around her finger.  “Georgio said he saw Prince Ryan at the art festival hosted by the elves.”

“Georgio always gets the best invitations,” Valeria agreed.

“We should ask Georgio to tea,” Syrena suggested, tucking a sprig of flowers back into her brown hair.  “He could help us fill in the blanks.”

“Oh, that’s a marvelous idea!”  Princess Miranda clapped her hands together.  “We must have tea tomorrow.  I need some answers to all these questions.”

These four had been best friends since they were old enough to walk.  Fairies tend to bond with those closest to them in age, and they had all been born in the same week.

“We could have a garden tea,” Elena suggested.  “The roses are lovely right now.”

“Oh, that’s a lovely idea,” Syrena agreed.  “We could have music and dancing.”

“And we could invite some of Georgio’s friends,” Miranda added.  “Unless you three want to meet some of my soon-to-be husband’s pixie friends?”

“Tempting as that may be,” Syrena said, “I am going to wait for true love.”

“Here she goes again,” Elena said, rolling her eyes.  “True love is a fairytale.”

“I can’t think of anything more like a fairytale than a pixie prince marrying a fairy princess.” Valeria sighed. “It’s practically perfect.”

Elena shrugged.  “When destiny makes plans, we are often the last to know.”

“Oh, fiddle sticks,” Miranda replied.  “Let’s make plans for the tea, and you will be beautiful in a blue gown.”

“Blue?” Elena repeated, her dark brown eyes lighting up.  “Do you really think so?”

“It’s my wedding.”  Miranda smiled.  “I definitely have a say as to what my best friends will wear.”

“I’d like to wear lavender,” Syrena said.

“Pink for me.” Valeria smiled.  “I look great in pink.”

“I think we can arrange that,” Miranda replied.

    Chapter 2

Georgio smiled at the fairies seated with him.  “This tea is heavenly.”  He looked at Princess Miranda.  “Now, what did you want to know?”

“Oh, Georgio,” Miranda replied with a smile, “you always know everything that happens in each kingdom.  What can you tell me about Prince Ryan?”

“Surely, you have met,” Georgio said in surprise.  When Miranda shook her head, he added, “He’s a fine young man.  Very polite, accomplished…” he looked around at the fairies, “and quite attractive.”

“Sounds dreamy,” Valeria said, fluttering her eyelashes.  “Does he have any friends?”

Georgio laughed.  “He has many friends, and I’m sure they’ll all be at the wedding.”

Elena nodded.  “I knew it.  I knew he’d have friends worthy of a prince.”

“We’ll find out more at the brunch tomorrow,” Miranda said.

“Brunch?” Syrena repeated.  “They’re coming here?”  She glanced at the others.  “We have so much to do.”

“We’re meeting them for brunch,” Miranda assured her, then smiled.  “I received a note this morning that they’re sending a special transport for us.”

“A special transport,” Georgio repeated.  “Oh, it has to be an airship.”

“Pixies have airships?” Elena asked in surprise.

“Elves have airships,” Georgio clarified, “but they do loan them out for special occasions.”  He smiled.  “Large, colorful fabric above them that’s filled with air, and the passengers ride in a special basket.”

“Oh, how unusual,” Valeria said.  “I’ve never heard of such a thing.”

“Another reason this union is so important.”  Georgio turned to Miranda.  “You do want to get married, don’t you?”

“It is my duty and my honor,” Miranda assured him.  “I’ve always known my destiny was to make the best match for our people, and this sounds like one I will also enjoy.”

“I believe you will,” Georgio agreed.  “Now, let me tell you about their colorful gardens, which are simply divine.”

“I’m looking forward to seeing those,” Syrena said.  “I’ve heard they’re very beautiful.”
